![]() Looking for more production tips and tricks? Check these out. It’s an exciting time, and I can’t wait to see how all of these technologies advance in the coming months and years. In the video above, I went and shot a whole short film of nature footage in the desert without even knowing what the character would look like. This development in my own creative world has led me to kick off multiple projects that are taking on full-CG characters and compositing in ways that I never would have never tried before. Things that weren’t possible even a few short years ago are now possible with only person, at home, quickly and cheaply. The thing I love about all of these tools becoming so much more accessible is that it opens up new ways of thinking about filmmaking and telling stories. Mixamo is an Adobe tool that has a lot of features like rigged royalty free characters that you can use in your renders right now, as well as mocap animations you can add to your characters (and a really powerful auto-rigging tool that you can use to add a rig to your custom characters).īoth are free to use, and both are very fun and powerful. Rokoko has a l a r g e r motion library than anyone, with hundreds of thousands of motion capture animations that you can use right now (most of which will require a subscription). Rokoko Studio is the proprietary application intended for use in conjunction with your Rokoko Smartsuit however, you can definitely use it without one. Two free tools that you can use for most portions of your motion capture workflows are Rokoko Studio and Mixamo. However, I definitely think over a short period of time, the tides may change. The other options are still very much in their infancy, and there is a lot of room to grow. Especially now that they discontinued the Kinect, it’s even more expensive, almost half the cost of the refurbished Kinect device! So I recommend getting the Kinect Adapter from other manufacturers, like the one from the Amazon link on the right. So, if you want to, you can go full send with a Rokoko motion capture suit, but as you can see in the video above, you really don’t have to. Microsoft does offer an Adapter cable with Microsoft’s name slapped on the box, but it’s insanely expensive. Unlike the Kinect device, Adapter cable is brand new, but is NOT manufactured by Microsoft. The one I bought hasn’t been in stock for awhile now, so I have added a different Amazon item link. The Kinect Adapter cable Amazon item shown on the right isn’t the one I bought, but it’s the same type of cable. ![]() This cable is absolutely necessary to capture and record the motion to a 3D application on your PC. You also need a special cable that will allow a Windows 10 PC to communicate with the Kinect. The links on the right are Amazon affiliate links. It’s used because Microsoft discontinued the product many years ago and the only way to get the Kinect now is through the refurbished market. Mocap Fusion VR is an immersive roomscale VR motion capture sandbox for artists and animators who wish to create and export motion capture animations. The Amazon item shown on the right is the Kinect that I bought USED. ![]() A lot of commercial motion capture software still require the use of the Kinect for live mocap recording. Even after the Kinect market started jacking up the prices after Microsoft announced the discontinuation of production, it is still the most affordable and most compatible device for motion capture at home. Today we have a lot more choices, but at the price point of the Kinect, there aren’t many that can compete with the price. I’m not sure what you would do for laptops though. So the PC needs to have a USB 3.1 peripheral plug or you can always buy a PCI USB 3.1 card on Amazon and upgrade the PC. It’s an adapter that links the Kinect to the PC through a USB 3.1 plug. So you need to buy a special cable for the Kinect to work with the PC. The original packaging of the Kinect doesn’t come with USB cables for the PC, because it was originally intended for the Xbox exclusively until Microsoft realized the hacker community was obsessed with it. Unfortunately Microsoft discontinued manufacturing the Kinect and all the accessories, so consumers need to resort to after marketplaces to get home-made cables for the Kinect. If it wasn’t labelled as “ used”, I seriously wouldn’t be able to tell. My 2 nd gen Kinect bought online used was in very nice condition.
